In view of the aforementioned goals and objectives, in 1955 the Nurses Chapter of the AAA commenced, with the personal initiative of Mrs. Sarah George Shahla, a graduate of the AUB School of Nursing, to launch a fund raising campaign in Lebanon and other countries especially USA, in favor of building a “Nursing Home” for those who spared no efforts in serving humanity and upon retirement find themselves abandoned.

The primary objective of the “Nurses Home” was to accommodate fifty nurses.

Eventually, all efforts culminated in buying a piece of land located in Sabtiyeh district in the northeastern suburb of Beirut whereby the “ultimate” home was built.

The objectives of founding the “Nurses Home”:

The “Nurses Home” was established with the following objectives in mind, according to the primary founders.

 > A residence center for retired needy nurses.
 > Upgrade the standard of students applying to the School of    Nursing by securing them a decent end of service place for retirement.
 > Provide a “home away from home” for visiting and guest nurses who come to participate in local conferences and symposia.

What has become of the “Nurses Home”?

As you know, Lebanon has been the platform of a devastating civil war that extended over two decades whereby people and property received their share of destruction and damage and the “Nurses Home” is no exception.
On top to obvious physical damage caused by direct shelling, it was occupied by displaced people for several years rendering it not suitable for its original intension or any other intension.

Finally, we hereby present to you our budgeted proposal hoping that it will be taken into consideration to enable us all renovate our “Nurses Home” and by doing this, we would be given the chance to achieve the primary objectives of the founders and promote the standards of the nurses profession to shape a brighter future.

Respectfully yours,

Nuhad Dumit,
President – Nurses’ Chapter,
AUB Alumni Association.
